"A Proclamation Direct Support Professionals Week

Whereas: Direct Support Professionals are the primary providers of publicly funded long-term support for individuals living with disabilities across our state; and

Whereas: Direct Support Professionals must establish close relationships based upon trust and respect in order to properly support the people they serve. Through their efforts, Direct Support Professionals empower individuals with disabilities, allowing them to live fulfilling lives in the community of their choice; and

Whereas: Direct Support Professionals aid their clients with personal care assistance daily, providing an extensive range of individualized support. Their services include job training and/or coaching, teaching individuals how to navigate home life, and assistance with general affairs such as financial matters; and

Whereas: Direct Support Professionals also provide transportation to school, work, religious services, medical appointments, and recreational activities to individuals with disabilities; and

Whereas: The essential services of Direct Support Professionals help individuals with disabilities to remain connected with their loved ones and members of their community without subjecting them to more costly institutional care; and

Whereas Most Direct Support Professionals provide the primary income for their family; and Whereas Direct Support Professionals have been working to help the most vulnerable among us navigate the COVID-19 pandemic; and

Whereas There is a critical and growing shortage of Direct Support Professionals in every community throughout the United States

Therefore I, Pete Ricketts, Governor of the state of Nebraska, do hereby proclaim September 12th-18th, 2021 Direct Support Professional Recognition Week. I encourage all Nebraskans to recognize and appreciate the dedication and contributions of these providers."
